Cannellonis & Coffee Houses

Cannelloni Agli Spinaci

I had a chance of dining at Trattoria Sicily yesterday while waiting for a friend who I met up with at Hollys afterwards. She’s on a diet and has actually skipped dinner on several occasions before, so I assume she wouldn’t be having dinner tonight. Most likely she would just order coffee, reason for me to gorge on some real food before she arrives. I’m hankering for some Italian but wanted something new, so I gave this a try.

I ordered cannelloni agli spinaci - baked cannelloni stuffed in spinach and cream cheese, topped with bechamel sauce and parmesan cheese, and a glass of lemonade.

I’m not crazy about this cannelloni. It’s a tad bland for my taste. I was expecting big flavors - meaty, cheesy goodness, typical of a lasagna-like dish as this one. You would agree with me that it looks like lasagna at first glance, yes? Having realized it was all veggies, I hoped that the cheese be its saving grace. To my chagrin, even that failed to deliver. It made me wonder how one could ever go wrong with cheese. It’s supposed to taste… well, cheesy. And if it’s cheese, it must be good. (And I hate that it sounded like a tagline from Seiko films)

Never get to taste spinach much, so I was quite surprised to learn that it tasted like… uhm, what’s that vegetable called?, the main star of “laing”??, the one with giant, umbrella-like leaves that grows on water? Geez, I forgot.

I went to Hollys afterwards and ordered Belgian Chocolate Hollycino, which, as the list displayed at the counter claims, is one of their most-ordered drinks. True enough, this one is way better than the Sweet Potato Hollycino I ordered the last time.

About two hours of chit chat and a cup of regular frappe later, the paging system announces the closing of the shop in a few minutes. We haven’t really had our fill of juicy gossips and rants just yet, as there are a lot to catch up on, so we decided to move to Starbucks to have it continued. We are relentless, I know.

At Starbucks, I ordered brewed coffee and their Ultimate Grilled Cheese, “a sinfully delicious gooey grilled cheese sandwich coupled with six types of cheeses - Gruyere, Emmenthal, Feta, Provolone, Mozzarella and cheddar, with slice of Hungarian sausage and subtly seasoned with roasted garlic and Italian herbed butter on bread”- philippines.starbucks.com. My friend took the opportunity to purchase another Starbucks mug for her collection.

As we were situated near the bay, in the backdrop of luxurious private boats, it seemed natural to plan the next activity somewhere involving water, the sea. We thought of maybe in a floating restaurant or a cruise. And since we have nothing left to talk about, we basically ended the day on that note.
